Home » Meta-analysis boosts vitamin C's heart benefits
The Facts:
- Vitamin C can significantly reduce harmful blood fats in patients with high cholesterol levels, according to a pooled analysis of 13 randomised trials.
- To achieve significant reductions in LDL and triglyceride levels, patients took at least 500mg of vitamin C daily for a minimum of 4 weeks.
- Vitamin C supplementation had only slightly beneficial effects on HDL cholesterol levels.
Dr Shaun Holt:
Did you know that vitamin C could lower your cholesterol?! This meta-analysis of 13 clinical trials found that at least ½ a gram a day for at least 4 weeks was needed to reduce serum LDL cholesterol and serum triglyceride levels. Citrus fruits have around 50mg of vitamin C per 100g and the chances of side effects from taking too much vitamin C are very low.
